A Brief History of Ashburn, VA
According to one legend, Ashburn got its name from an ash tree that was struck by lightning on the farm of John Janney, a Quaker lawyer and one-time vice presidential nominee. The tree purportedly smoldered for days after the lightning strike, attracting people from around the area who were eager to see the burning tree for themselves.
A less dramatic story about the origins of Ashburn is that Janney named his farm Ashburn farm after family friends who had that particular surname. Originally, Ashburn was known primarily as “Farmwell,” a name that first appeared in George Lee’s October 1802 will, and variously as “Old Farmwell” and “Farmwell Station.” Lee had inherited a 1,236-acre plantation from his father, while 580 acres were purchased by Janney for his summer home, which was located in the middle of what is now Ashburn Park.
